PREVALENCE AND EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROPHYLE OF HUMAN IMMUNIDEFIECIENCY VIRUS -INFECTED PEOPLE IN THE MADRID AUTONOMOUS REGION

SUMMARY
In the Madrid Autonomous Region (MAR) there are limited data on living human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients. The objective of this study is to describe the epidemiological features of HIV-infected patients in the MAR in 2013, and to calculate the prevalence rate.

METHODS
Cross-sectional descriptive analysis of HIV-infected people residing in the MAR included in HIV/AIDS register as of 31 December 2013. Variables studied: Sex, age, birth place, and transmission mode. AIDS cases have been included. The population of reference was the MAR, with real-time census data.

RESULTS
As at the end of 2013, there were 15,757 living HIV-infected people. The rate of prevalence per 100,000 inhabitants was 242.6 cases. 79.8% were men and 69.9% Spanish born. Average age was 43.5 years. (SD 10.8). The most frequent methods of transmission were: 41.6% of men who have sex with men (MSM) and 26.8% people who inject drugs (PID). 31.6% of HIV infected people have developed AIDS.

CONCLUSIONS
The HIV-infected population in MAR is characterized mainly by men, through sexual intercourse between men, mostly Spanish nationality and between 40 and 49 years old. The highest prevalence rates are found among men, foreigners and in the group 40-59 years old. Approximately a third of the patients have developed AIDS
